What is the difference between rekeying and replacing?

Replacing a lock means we take the whole hardware off the door and put a new one on. Rekeying involves changing the internal pins so the old key no longer works and a new one does. It is like changing your password instead of buying a whole new computer.

Should I rekey my locks when I move?

Unless you enjoy the idea of the previous owners, their kids, and their old cleaning crew having a key to your house, yes. You never know how many copies of that old key are floating around the neighborhood. Rekeying gives you a “clean slate” for your home security from day one.

Can you rekey different brands to one key?

Usually, no; locks have to be of the same “keyway” family to share a key. For example, a Kwikset key won’t fit into a Schlage lock no matter how hard you push. If your locks are different brands, we can often replace the cylinders so they all play nicely together on one ring.

How long does it take to rekey a whole house?

For a standard Charlotte home with four or five locks, we can usually have you set up with new keys in under an hour. We work on-site out of our mobile service van, so you aren’t left with an unlocked house. We test every single lock twice to make sure the new keys turn like butter.

Can you rekey a lock without the original key?
